Virunga Power is an experienced developer of hydropower and minigrid projects in East and Southern Africa. We invested in the business to enable the company to further develop a portfolio of (primarily) hydropower decentralised renewable energy projects that serve rural customers in Burundi, Malawi, Kenya and Zambia. These projects will also help reduce carbon emissions as they will typically replace the use of diesel generators and the burning of charcoal.

A portfolio with a spread of projects like these will position Virunga Power as one of the first sustainable rural utilities in Africa, once it achieves scale, and this will create demonstration effects, learning and replication.

We’ve been working closely with the business to introduce it to our partners, develop relationships with our other portfolio companies and support engagement with governments – especially in Burundi where Virunga Power is looking to develop a long-term rural distribution concession. Although this project is in its early stages, it is a great example of the progress that can be made when the public and private sector work in tandem.
