Through our involvement in Moyi, we have brought experienced partners onto the project and inspired similar projects.

Moyi Power has been developed following original project preparation funded by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office. The programme was designed to provide scale and appropriate regulation in the minigrid sector as a template for future projects in DRC and beyond. A Gridworks-led consortium – which includes our partners Eranove, a prominent West African utility company, and AEE Power, a contractor with extensive experience in the DRC – won a competitive tender process to become the developer of the project.

Since Moyi Power was launched, there has been significant interest in the concept of delivering minigrids (or small greenfield utilities) at this scale and with robust regulatory frameworks and contractual protection for investors.

“The big issue in African transmission and distribution is financing and funding, and Gridworks’ approach currently is the ideal one. They have funding and are identifying the key partners up front, those with the right experience, knowledge and technology.”
