Is what Uganda needs in funding for transmission and distribution by 2030 with the private sector required to provide a significant portion of it.

A market-
shaping
project

Amari is the first of its kind on the African continent. We developed the project and have worked closely with the government and regulator in Uganda to create a transaction structure and terms to fit with existing legislation.

The project has now been adopted as an official pilot for private investment in the sector. It is being carried out in tandem with a World Bank-funded consultancy process to design a formal framework for transmission investment in Uganda. Amari will, therefore, quite literally shape the Ugandan transmission sector and serve as an example to other countries. It comes at a critical time too – to meet government targets, Uganda needs more than $1.6 billion of funding for transmission and distribution by 2030 with the private sector required to provide a significant portion of it.

"It was a pleasure to announce our pilot project with Gridworks that will bring new, private investment to Uganda’s transmission sector. By increasing investment in our electricity grid, we will be able to unlock suppressed demand; boost industrialisation and power our export sector. Our pilot will be helpful in establishing a successful model that can be duplicated to catalyse further investments in the sector."
